The Benson Institute designed the Family Self-Sufficiency
Program for the slow-growing agricultural sector in developing
countries (#1). It projects the use of small animals to
provide protein to the diet of small farmers and their families.
The use of small animals (#2)was considered, since low
income farmers in developing countries hardly own a hectare
of cultivable land. Such circumstances make it extremely
difficult for them to support their families, and eliminates
the possibility of raising large animals.
Most of the farmers have had some experience in raising
and handling small animals, which makes the program’s acceptance
easier. Unfortunately the type of animals and facilities
used, have made the raising of small animals an unprofitable
practice.
Another advantage of using small animals in the Family
Self-Sufficiency Program, is that they require very little
housing space. Also, due to their small size, they can be
raised to adapt and meet the family’s needs. Excess production
of large animals would require storage to which rural families
have no access.
If rural families practice the Benson Institute’s recommendations
for raising small animals, they will be able to have enough
high quality protein in the form of milk, cheese, eggs or
meat. They will also have the opportunity to turn all their
agricultural surplus into commercial products (such as chickens,
milk, cheeses and eggs) instead of selling them at low prices.
Besides raising small animals, as suggested by the program,
the Benson Institute offers a great opportunity for family
participation in the production process. All members of
the family will participate in caring for and handling the
animals, as well as in preparing the diets. The animals
will be housed in cages and pens near the house to facilitate
the family’s involvement.
Small animals will not only increase the income-yielding
activity in the small plots of land, but will also integrate
the family in the production process, and will supplement
the family’s diet with high quality protein.
